Hip new slang is a staple in every generation. We all used to use terms and phrases that we thought were cool. While our parents, on the other hand, had no idea what we were saying. I, for instance, remember using the word “swag” for anything and everything. Cringe! Nowadays, I find myself having to look up the meaning of slang terms like “boss mom” and “that’s so slay”. Attempting a conversation with younger generations is beginning to feel a lot like learning a second language. I have no idea what these kids are talking about. And, let me tell you, the realization that I can no longer keep up with times, was not a fun one. At the ripe age of 25, I felt startlingly old.
Despite my inability to keep up with this generation’s cool new terms, I have learned a few that I really do enjoy. I’ve come to enjoy the term “situationship”. Mainly because I find the added drama to the dating world kind of funny now that I am happily married. I also enjoy “Iykyk”, or in simpler words, “if you know, you know”. I guess those five words are easier to abbreviate than just type out. My all time favorite term that I’ve really found a lot of self confidence in is “Boss Mom”! What’s a Boss Mom, you ask? A “Boss Mom” is an “ambitious, highly driven, fierce, and outspoken mother who gets the job done”. According to the almighty Google and Urban Dictionary.
How powerful does that make you feel as a mom?! Knowing that there’s a hip new slang term for all the hard working mothers out there. Personally, it makes me feel empowered to do anything! The best part being, this term isn’t directed solely any one mom group, instead the term is directed to every mom out there that is simply doing her best. Boss Mom’s are the women who tackle motherhood while climbing the corporate ladder of any kind. Boss Mom’s are the stay-at-home moms and the moms that work part time. Most importantly, a Boss Mom is every single woman out there that is facing motherhood.
We’re all out there on the front lines everyday. Regardless of your career status, if you woke up this morning (with or without feet in your ribs like me) and faced motherhood head on, you are a Boss Mom. Congratulations momma! Treat yourself to a glass of wine and a “girl dinner”. You deserve it!
